FARM FELLOW PROGRAM

The Details

Our apprenticeship program offers a paid, educational opportunity for four candidates looking to immerse themselves in learning about sustainable agriculture. Apprentice training is a big part of how we fulfill our vision of "building a just and equitable food system."

Soul Food Project is an educational farm, and becoming an apprentice provides a comprehensive experience of our farm from the inside out. Apprentices work in all aspects of the farm's production, from soil preparation to harvest, from administration to marketing farm products.

During the course of the season, apprentices are given the information and time to learn the essential skills needed to manage a mixed organic/biodynamic farm on their own. In return, apprentices are expected to give their labor for the daily working of the farm.

OK, here's our description of the ideal Farm Fellow:

  • are honest, responsible, respectful, reliable, and self-motivated;

  • take pride in doing high-quality work;

  • work well with others and individually;

  • are excited about working in community with others.

If you:

  • are ready to learn,

  • can take and give direction,

  • are excited about working intensely with all types of people,

  • are open to receiving constructive feedback

Then you should apply, but also...

People skills are important. You should:

  • display a friendly, energetic, and engaged demeanor when interacting with CSA members and customers at our farm stands

  • be comfortable interacting with and leading volunteers, student work groups, and corporate work groups.

You should also know that this is physically hard work and can be demanding:

You should:

  • be able to lift at least 55 pounds,

  • be comfortable bending, squatting, kneeling, and lifting for extended periods,

  • expect to get dirty on a regular basis,

  • be prepared to work in all weather conditions (wind, rain, heat, cold),

  • find enjoyment in doing manual labor.

A few other requirements...

  • a valid drivers license and clean driving record,

  • your own transportation

We're looking for a Fellow who wants to make a difference in the food system.
